The Interview Process: 3 Tips To Hiring The Best Employees

3 Things To Consider When Hiring New Team Members

With all the hard work you’ve put into building your company, you deserve dedicated employees on your team. However, finding the right people can be difficult. Some candidates are able to dazzle you during the interview process and turn out to be horrible employees. Alternatively, someone who performed poorly during the interview can become a star member of your team. Being interviewed is an unnatural setting which often leads people to struggle under pressure. With this in mind, building the best kind of team will take patience.

Company Culture

Nobody knows the culture of your company as well as you do. Therefore, take some time to consider the type of people you’d like to take onboard. Will they fit in with the existing culture? How can they contribute to it? Would they be able to change it for the better if they stay for a while? A good point to keep in mind is that the people you’ve already taken onboard may know someone who can benefit your company. Good people know good people and you should take advantage of their network first.

One of the reasons why so many people find a new job through their friends is because of the culture. When people enjoy the work they do, they tend to recommend people they know for positions in the same company. They would, after all, not recommend a workplace they hate to someone they love.  Take this as a compliment if someone turns to you with a potential candidate for an open position.

Top-Performing Employees

When hiring for a position, it’s easy to think about everything you’d like to candidate to be. He or she should be experienced, hard-working, skilled and focused. These should not be filler-words that anyone could claim. After all, you should have these employees on your team already. This is a real person, at the end of the day, and you have seen their skills in action with your own eyes. If you want to hire someone who could be an excellent team member, you need to use your best employee as an example.

You might want to involve your top performer in the hiring process.  This employee will know exactly what the team needs. It’s a good chance that they will be a bit more empathetic as well when it comes to the actual interview and may be able to identify nerves when they see them.

Don’t Rush The Process

While candidates may become frustrated by multiple interviews, you should never rush the hiring process. Take your time to determine if this potential new team member has the skills and traits you are looking for. Review the work experience and be sure to conduct a background check. If you are unfamiliar with what you should look for, be sure to do your research (read more here). Take your time to evaluate the candidate and consider if they are, in fact, a great match for your company.

By not spending enough time on this during the initial hiring process, you’re running the risk of hiring the wrong person. An excellent employee will be able to contribute to your company in more ways than just through their hard work.
