9 Tips On Improving Your Management Skills

Managing a team is both an exhausting and rewarding experience. For many business owners, management skills are often put to the test in extreme ways. While you may think you’re a good manager, there may be some areas that you are stronger in than others. And that’s okay. It’s better to know this up front than to assume the alternative. Managing a team is never going to be easy. You have different personalities to contend with, and not everyone is going to gel together. However, when it comes to your business and as a leader, you need to ensure that your management skills are effective and reasonable.

Share the Vision

As a business owner, or even as a manager, you will have a vision for the direction you want to take when it comes to your business. So you may want to ensure that you share this with each team member. If they are not aware of the journey you want to take when it comes to your business then they are not going to work effectively or the way you would like them to. If everyone is on the same page then things are likely to work and move forward.

Communicate with Employees

One of the best things that you can do regularly is communicate with your staff. You can do it on a one to one basis, using that as an opportunity to discuss individual targets and performance. People like to know where they are. This can also be a great motivator. You could also do group meetings, perhaps in the morning to discuss the day or military style debrief meetings at the end of the day. It could be a great way to ensure you also keep that important lines of communication open.

Support New Ideas and Initiatives

It isn’t always about delegating and ensuring that people do exactly what you want 100% of the time. You actually do need to be open to new ideas and initiatives that people suggest. Someone on the frontline perhaps may have an idea of an alternative method for selling products and services. As a manager, you need to listen and support new ideas that are presented to you and consider the pros and cons attached to them.

Set Challenges

One of the main priorities is to help people grow. But if they are consistently doing the same thing over and over again, chances of this happening are slim. Allow your staff to test their skills and learn new things. Setting challenges is a great way to motivate a team to try different things and learn to step up their career options.

10 Must Have Resources to Grow Your Business

Encourage Creativity

One of the biggest mistakes a manager can make is to micro-manage the team. It is often seen as controlling and distrustful.  If you find that you are becoming too hands-on, try and take a step back. Allowing staff to be creative and problem solve on their own can get you results. Helping them to be creative with their output and how they do things moving forward.

Support Employee Development

There is no hiding from the fact that everyone has their own agenda, especially when it comes to their career and their next steps. You will also have your own agenda when it comes to your management position or the business you have. It is important to understand that others may want to progress and move their career forward. Listen to these aspirations and help in any way you can through the business to help people achieve the progression they want to make. It can help them to keep motivated about their job and work hard for you and the business.

Create Healthy Competition

It is also a good idea to create some healthy competition among the team members. Especially if there is a sales environment. This can be a huge incentive and motivation as people will always strive to do their best in any way that they can. You could also add incentives into the mix so that people have something to work towards and achieve.

Pleasant Working Environment

The environment in which people work in is also an important factor. You need to ensure that this is the ideal place for people to work. That an office is not too cold or too hot. That there are facilities so that people can make drinks or have their lunches. That their environment is clean and tidy. It’s basic stuff but can make a huge difference to team morale.

Celebrate Successes

Finally, make sure you celebrate the successes of your team and the individuals involved. Whether it’s a small thing or a huge achievement it always feels good to be recognized.  It can be a strong motivating factor to keep up the good work ethic. By doing this you are showing your team that even the smallest steps forward are worth celebrating.
