One of the most complicated aspects of running a small business is product design and development. No matter how smooth your processes may be, poor product design can cause your business to collapse. After all, your profits revolve almost entirely around being able to offer quality. However, many entrepreneurs are unfamiliar with the product design process. Here’s a short guide to everything product design!
Product Discovery
Many small business owners mistakenly think they have to come up with a great idea out of thin air. The truth is, you just have to discover what consumers want and provide them with it. This will involve various forms of research including polling customers. Browse the market, identify gaps, and conduct market research to see what consumers expect from a product intended to fill the gap.
Competitor Analysis
Once you have a vague idea of what you want to produce, conduct a little competitor analysis. See whether anyone else has tried to create a similar product and has it failed. If so, figure out why they failed and if there’s anything you can do to improve on this. If you intend to improve on something that already exists, see whether the company with the existing product have any form of patents on the idea. Determine whether they are likely to imitate your product with the advantage of an established brand name.
Prototype and Product Testing
If you decide to go ahead with your idea, create a few prototypes and undertake product testing. Product testing will ensure that all items launched are suitable and safe for consumers. If you launch items that harm or injure your customers, you will quickly be contacted by a defective products lawyer with claims against you. Releasing faulty products will also result in a costly product recall and can stain your reputation.
Progress
If your products are safe and in good condition, it’s time to progress onto the next stage. This can include mass manufacturing, product packaging, product launches, and marketing or advertising campaigns.
Hopefully, this short guide will help you to come up with a product and get it out into the marketplace as soon as possible!
