When you tell people you’re an entrepreneur, their first reaction will depend on one thing: your age. It sounds crazy, but it’s the truth. If you’re a silver-haired gentleman with a penchant for three-piece suits, people will immediately want to know more about your story. If, however, you’re a millennial that has a similar dress sense to Ed Sheeran, the reaction leans the other way. People just don’t seem to take millennial entrepreneurs as seriously. It’s why we get such a kick out of hearing stories where young entrepreneurs have kicked butt and taken their industry by storm. Nonetheless, there are a few pieces of advice that we believe every young entrepreneur needs to know and adhere to. They will help you overcome any eye-rolling from senior employees you face in the future.
Don’t Get Distracted
If you’ve watched any documentaries on how successful people made it to where they are now (The Defiant Ones being a prime example right now), you’ll see how dedicated they were to the cause. A big reason for this is: they had no other choice. They didn’t have the plethora of distractions that we have nowadays; distractions that quickly dent our dwindling attention spans. That could be social media apps or it could be the latest marketing fads. Whatever it is, don’t be distracted.
Consistency Is Key
When it comes to being a successful entrepreneur, consistency is the key. It’s having consistency in your products, in your service, in your voice, your branding, your business, everything. To help you with this, try to practice consistency in every aspect of your life. That doesn’t mean you should stop looking for ways to innovate. But if you can systematize and document your consistent processes, you’ll become much better at automating, delegating, and outsourcing repetitive tasks as you scale.
Know When Help Is Good
You’ve no doubt worn a thousand different hats during your journey as an entrepreneur, some of which you have felt more confident adorning than others. This is because no one person is great at everything. What separates the wannabe entrepreneurs from the successful ones are spotting this and knowing how to remedy the situation. That means having a mentor that’s been there and done it to help you learn from other people’s mistakes. Bring on a specialist in areas you feel the need, such as Danny DeMichele for digital marketing or Copper Milk Creative for copywriting. Too many entrepreneurs think they need to go it alone in order to be classed an entrepreneur, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Know Your Industry Inside Out
You might think you know what you are doing and what you are talking about, and you probably do. But have you ever tried to pitch to someone who knows nothing about your industry? It’s a great exercise in seeing what questions they ask and how seeing how simple you can keep your answers. But it is also a great way to, identify and fix issues, as well as fill the other person with confidence in what you do. As a wise person once said, “There’s a world of difference between an answer you give to an anticipated question and an answer you have to think up on the spot.”
