According to some surveys, the fear of public speaking is ranked higher than any other fear. In fact, many people would prefer to die than give a public speech. The fear of public speaking is a natural emotion that many entrepreneurs deal with. However, mastering the art of public speaking is essential to your success. The ability to deliver a strong message to an audience is a vital tool. It allows you to influence people on a large scale as well. Whether you’re Jozef Opdeweegh or Richard Branson, the more charismatic a speaker you can become, the better.
Public speaking can be a huge obstacle for many entrepreneurs. This article looks at three fundamental principles that will help improve this skill.
Stop Focusing On Your Fear
There is an energetic law that states what we focus on expands, meaning, if we focus on our fear then the fear grows. Many entrepreneurs experience that fear because they associate negativity with public speaking. The fear takes over. You imagine a scenario that may never occur. After all, how you think is how you act.
Expect Success
The universal law of expectation states what we expect to happen will manifest itself into reality. This means that if you expect to mess up your presentation, there is a good chance that you will. With that said, the majority of leaders and successful performers point out the need for positive expectations.
Think of an athlete preparing for a race. He rehearses the race over and over again in his mind, literally programming his subconscious to win the race. Interestingly, when athletes are wired up to sophisticated biofeedback monitoring devices, the same muscles fire in the same sequence as they actually do when he’s running the race. Your mind is a powerful tool and it can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It all depends on how you think.
Expect success, focus on the positive, and rehearse your speech over and over again. Get on stage feeling calm, relaxed, focused and engaging.
Consider Hiring A Coach
If your fear of public speaking is too great to tackle alone, consider hiring a voice coach or an acting coach. Coaches can help you develop your abilities. A presentation coach can be a great investment. Not only does it equip you with the tools and strategies to succeed, it gives you an immense feeling of confidence as a “trained speaker”. There are plenty of online courses you could take in speaker training, but for the best results, you want to attend a live class where you get to speak in front of an audience and receive personalized feedback.
Finally, on a related note, you want to get out there and practice. It doesn’t matter where you practice, even if it’s just in a mirror, at first – but practice. This will build your competency, and in turn, this will build your confidence in yourself and help you overcome the crippling fear of public speaking that plagues so many of us.
