How’s your marketing going? Is this a question others ask you or you ask yourself regularly? Probably not. For most of us who work as solopreneurs, we tend to adopt a head down attitude and plow forward. Working for yourself affords you very little time for evaluation and introspection. However, as a small business owner, planning for growth is essential.
Whether you write a business blog or sell physical goods and services, you want control of where your business is heading to. So how do you go about getting your marketing on point?
Your Aims
Put down on paper where you wanted to be six months, a year, five years from now. Ask yourself, have you started to achieve these goals? If your list is too vague, consider using the SMART planning system to develop them further. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. It’s these objectives that will form the basis of any marketing or PR plan that you subsequently create.
Your Methods
Now you need a roadmap to determine how you’re going to get there. This is when research and networking become important. Scour the business pages of your favorite bloggers and advice gurus. Download that eMarketing book that you’ve always thought about reading to figure out how you’re going to start.
Set yourself a realistic schedule that fits in around your day job. Be sure to develop and include a social media element to your strategy. Give yourself the challenge of sending out several Tweets a day. Post on your social media business sites at least twice a day. Don’t waste time posting on social media platforms where your clients don’t hang out.
You don’t have to be a marketing guru to create a plan and figure out the best place to focus your marketing. This may even be an element of your business you choose to outsource. Even the smallest business can benefit from having a marketing structure and gain some brand awareness.
When you believe that your business is worth taking the time and trouble to invest and plan for, that’s when you’re going to see it take off and become what you always wanted it to be. Take some time today to plan for a successful future tomorrow.
