Marketing is constantly evolving with the times. A lot of strategies that were once incredibly effective have been replaced. Here are just a few marketing strategies that have become outdated and are no longer worth investing money into.
Phonebook Advertising
Before the internet, most people searched for companies using a phonebook. Businesses would pay a lot of money to have an advertisement printed on the right page. Nowadays, practically no-one uses phonebooks. Search engines have taken over as the new place to attract customers. Many businesses are now investing money to appear on the first pages of Google rather than the first pages of the phonebook. This process is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Unlike paying for a phonebook ad, there’s no certainty to this strategy. However, by doing your research and using one of the best SEO firms you can increase your chances of getting good rankings. Unless your customers are largely older people that are less likely to use computers, steer clear of phonebook advertising as it is pretty much a dying medium.
Brochure Advertising
If you sell an array of products and you want somewhere to display them, consider whether printing a brochure is really the sensible option. Many companies today simply rely on websites to display their products. You could even try creating an app that displays all your products with the help of an app development company. Either way, you’re likely to spend less money in the long run. In this age where companies are trying to actively cut their paper usage, doing away with brochures can also make you appear more environmentally friendly.
Cold Calling
Nobody likes receiving sales calls. Nowadays, it’s harder than ever to sell things over the phone. Many states have laws concerning obtaining people’s contact details and how they are used. Telesales can sometimes still work with existing customers. It’s also possible to use sites like LinkedIn to set up scheduled phone calls that are likely to be a lot more effective.
Snail Mail (Door-to-Door Flyers)
As mentioned with brochures, today’s businesses are trying to be greener, which means cutting down on paper usage. Physical mail and flyer distribution aren’t just a waste of paper, but they’re also a waste of time and money. Most people see this as junk mail and throw it straight in the trash. Email marketing receives pretty much the same results as sending out physical newsletters. There’s also social media marketing and PPC advertising which usually gets a lot more results than printing off flyers when it comes to attracting new customers. The only time you may want to print out flyers is if you’re at an event containing your key consumers.
