The Downside Of Traveling For Work

The Downside Of Traveling For Work

For many entrepreneurs, traveling for work allows you to meet new people and grow your business. However, this is typically half of the story. The other half often consists of a reduction in the quality of your life and finances. While we’re not recommending that you move to a stationary position, it’s important to know the negative aspects of this kind of work before making it a part of your job.

Lack of Free Time

It’s not just that you’ve got a day of meetings lined up in a different city. It’s that you have to travel there, and back. All of a sudden, that 9-5 day of meetings has turned into how many hours of work. And when you get home, it’s not like you suddenly get to enjoy all the pleasures of home life: you’re so beat from the day, or have to follow up with the things you set up when you were working. It’s not just the time you spend in a destination – it’s everything around it that factors into your lifestyle, too.

Increased Chance of Injuries

You’re on the road so you can grow your business or further your career, but does it cost you more money than you realized? For starters, it’s not cheap to drive a car for hours on end. Fuel is expensive! Secondly, the longer you’re on the road, the greater the chance that you’ll have an accident of some kind. So make sure you’re never driving long distances when you’re exhausted after a long day of work, and make sure you’re working with a car or truck accident law firm if you are involved in an incident that wasn’t your fault. If you’re the one responsible for paying the fuel bill, you’ll be well served by learning how to drive for the best MPG, too.

Interview Mode

If you’re forever traveling, it can sometimes feel like your personality takes a back seat after a while. Instead, you’re forever in professional mode. After all, from the moment you leave the house, you’re doing your bit for your job, and that means you need to show seriousness and professionalism all the time. While this might help get the job done, it might also feel like you lose touch with who you are.

Business Expenses

If you’ve traveled as an individual, then you’ll know that it’s not cheap to move around and spend nights on hotels. The cost doesn’t go down just because it’s a business trip (if anything, it goes up). You can keep your expenses down by staying at budget hotels – you won’t be spending time there anyway – and flying at low-peak times.

Social Connections

Finally, your friends and family! If you’re never at home, it can get lonely, so make sure you’re staying in touch via other means when you’re on the road.
