It doesn’t take a genius to know that well-trained employees are essential in any business. Not only does this make your business more productive, but it also ensures that you have something to offer your team over other companies. If you don’t already keep on top with field-specific training, it’s time that you start.
Unfortunately, there are no one-size fits all training method for all industries. As with anything, the training you need to offer is very much dependent on your chosen field. While there may be crossovers in certain areas, you need to prepare your team in your field of choice. Only then can you ensure utmost working conditions and performance.
RETAIL
Being one of the most common sectors, we thought it made sense to start with retail. By 2026, a predicted 4,682,100 will be working in this field. You could say, then, that it’s a pretty big business. Add to that the fact this is, by far, the most customer-facing role out there, and you could say training matters. But, what training?
Customer Service Training
Your retail staff will be on that shop floor dealing with customers all day. In a busy shop environment, this could mean interacting with hundreds of customers every shift. Go figure, then, that you need to make sure they’re up to speed with their customer service skills. This means taking care of everything, like teaching them how to greet customers, answer the phone, and even deal with complaints. You could also throw sales skills into the mix. These would make sure your team impresses every customer who steps through those doors. You can either take care of this yourself or rely on one of the many prepared training courses out there to do the job. Either way, this isn’t a step you can skip.
First Aid Training
If a customer has an accident on the shop floor, they’ll require immediate attention. Your staff’s ability to offer trained and efficient treatment could keep you out legal trouble. What’s more, you can’t provide this yourself whenever you fancy it. You need to send staff for official training so that they have certificates to back their skills. As a general rule, you should then make sure to have at least one trained first aid team member on shift at all times.
Product Knowledge Training
In many ways, your team is only as good as their knowledge of what they sell. If they don’t know the intricacies of your products, they’ll struggle to do deals and feel comfortable in their roles. Make sure it doesn’t happen; give regular training on every new season of stock you have in store.
CONSTRUCTION
The need for training doesn’t get much more critical than in the construction industry. This is a large industry which deals with significant risks. Hence why you need to make sure to train your team members in:
General Health and Safety Training
You need to know that your team is aware of how to recognize hazards and deal with them. The best chance you have of doing this is to send them on something like the OSHA-approved courses you’ll find on this site. This would give them all the necessary knowledge they’d need to start. All you’d need to do is keep them topped up with regular refresher sessions.
First Aid Training
Even with the best training, accidents happen in dangerous work environments like these. You need to know that there are always plenty of staff members around to know how to deal with them when they do.
Heavy Equipment Training
The chances are that you expect your team to deal with complex and dangerous equipment every day. You have both an ethical and legal responsibility to make sure they know how to use it. Before a team member sets foot on your construction sites, take the time to show them the ins and outs of any equipment. This should include general usage demonstrations and emergency procedures.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE BUSINESS
Last, we have the hospitality industry, namely the food and beverage side of things. With customers eating what your team serves, training is paramount to uphold standards. But, what training does a field like this require?
Food Hygiene Training
This is important for everyone, from your kitchen staff to your waiters. What’s more, slip-ups here could lead to closure if you aren’t careful as this is a major health and safety requirement. Don’t take any risks, then. Make sure to offer extensive food and hygiene training, and to provide refreshers on a regular basis.
Ordering Equipment Training
It’s now unusual for staff to take orders with pen and pad. Instead, most food businesses make use of ordering technology like the iPads you’ll find here. To ensure efficient service regardless, make sure staff are competent in using these.
Table Service Training
In many ways, this is like customer service training, but specific to your industry. By taking care of this, you ensure the members of your team are aware of how to approach tables and speak with the customers coming through your doors.
