Can You Put A Price On Employee Safety?

Every entrepreneur wants to keep their employees happy. After all, when employees are happy, the increase in productivity and profits is evident. However, a productive employee must also work in a safe environment. In today’s global market, big brands like Amazon with notoriously poor track records tend to fall short in that area. Employee safety must be at the forefront of any business, both legally and ethically. Falling short on workplace safety can result in injury and unnecessary legal costs for your business.

Taking Care of Employees

Taking care of your employees is more than just a courtesy. As a business owner, it is your legal responsibility. Hard work and challenges are completely reasonable things to expect from your employees. However, you cannot ask anything of them if you don’t establish a working environment that is safe.  For example, if something goes awry on your construction site as a result of your negligence, a construction accident lawyer can make life very difficult for you. Furthermore, avoidable accidents can diminish morale and undermine your employees’ faith in you. You may see an increase in employee turnover and damage to your reputation. These are eventualities that any reasonable entrepreneur would be keen to avoid.

Training

Training for employees who handle heavy or sharp objects or use hazardous or controlled substances regularly is a no-brainer. Ensure that your employees receiving regular training on how to perform their jobs safely. Even office employees need to be trained in how to ergonomically optimize their desk to mitigate injuries. The better trained your employees are, the more autonomous they are over their own safety.

Inspections and Audits

Once your employees are properly trained, they need to be held accountable for following the safety measures you have implemented. Schedule regular safety inspections and audits and be sure to document your findings.

Record Keeping

Inspections and audits are doubtlessly important. However, they are worthless if accurate records are not maintained. Record keeping is an essential way of charting your progress and ensuring that any issues are properly documented.

Open Dialogue

Finally, the most valuable way of determining what’s best for your employees is… asking them. Make sure that your employees have an open forum in which they can suggest ways to make their jobs easier. A simple suggestion box is a great way of allowing your employees to provide feedback.
