The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Starting a Fashion Boutique

The Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting a Fashion Boutique FEATURED

Do you live and breathe fashion?  Why not do something bold to pursue it? There are so many options and paths to becoming an entrepreneur in the fashion industry.  Opening your own fashion boutique could be a way to indulge in your passion.  Check out The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Starting a Fashion Boutique.

Try A Test Run

If you’ve ever worked in a clothing store, or it’s been a while since you did, it wouldn’t hurt to go try it out and see if you enjoy it. Apply for a part-time position at a clothing store and experience what it would be like to work in the industry. Make sure you do some weekend shifts so that you experience the store at its busiest. That will be a real test of whether or not you want to do this.

While things will be different when you’re running your own store, it’s a good way to see if you enjoy the basics of the job and the industry before you commit. It might even give you some ideas for your own store, so you could think of it as a market research exercise!

Work Out All of the Costs

Opening up your own store isn’t going to be cheap. There are a lot of things to consider before you even think about stock such as rent, bills, decor, staffing costs and more. Make a list of everything you’re going to need to buy, including looking for things like display mannequins for sale, to help you work out how much you’re going to need.

If your current savings aren’t going to cut it, you might want to think about bringing a partner on board to help you get your store off the ground.

Try Selling Online First

It’s no secret that high street stores are in decline – is now really the right time to be thinking about starting a retail business? More and more fashion businesses are launching online and finding great success – think ASOS, Missguided, Boohoo, and others. It might be worth exploring the possibility of starting with an online store that has fewer running costs than a physical store. You could even find that you can run your online store alongside your current job while you see how things turn out. That way you’ll always have your career to fall back on if things don’t work out.

If you’re inspired to make a fashion more than a passion or hobby, GO FOR IT.  Some of the top fashion moguls today have ditched their careers, including leaving academia, and have become successful while doing what they love.
