It’s important that your employees all get along. They don’t have to be best buddies, but they do need to be able to work together amicably. If there are too many conflicts in the workplace, it could affect morale and communication. Ultimately, employee relationships can affect productivity and making the office a miserable place to work. As the boss, you’ll need to play an essential part in rallying everyone together. Here are just a few ways in which you can improve camaraderie in the workplace.
Encourage Team Goals, Not Competition
Whilst competing employees against one another can sometimes have its benefits, there needs to be a mutual respect for each other first. If people don’t get along, you could be better off focusing on creating team goals rather than encouraging a divide with individual goals. Make sure that everyone can play a part in working towards these team goals and make sure to offer a reward that will motivate people to meet these objectives. This could be a monetary bonus or even paid time off.
Welcome New Recruits
Some companies can suffer from a divide between new staff and old staff. Make sure that when recruiting new staff members, you invest some time in introducing them to the team. Holding an introductory meeting and getting senior members of staff to help with training could help these new staff members to fit in.
Avoid Favoritism
While there may be employees who you favor more than others, try to make sure that everyone’s work is equally acknowledged. Problems may start to grow between those that are close to management and those that aren’t. You should praise those that are successful and encourage those that are struggling.
Take a Break From Work
You don’t want your company to be all work and no play. Try to host fun events and encourage jokes that make your employees feel they can loosen up more. You could even try organizing social events out of work hours. Christmas parties are great for everyone to get closer together (for example see unique staff Christmas party ideas). Even going out for lunches together or having a drink at the end of work could be enough to bring people together.
Toxic Employees
There are certain employees who may try to stir up trouble. They may even bully other employees or spread rumors. It’s important that you identify these employees and talk with them about this behavior if you feel that it’s having a negative effect on the group. There could be someone who constantly slacks and takes time off work, letting other people pick up the pieces and causing resentment. In the case of these employees yo,u may need to enforce punctuality and encourage them to work. Similarly, there could be someone who constantly makes errors that the rest of the team then has to repair. This employee is likely to need more training and requires frequent check ups to ensure they’re not making extra errors.
