Leaving the comfort of corporate America to start a home-based business is risky at best. However, Atlanta, GA based Destini Copp took the challenge. In her first Savvy Entrepreneur Spotlight, Destini shared how she left the corporate world behind to start her own online education business. As a strategic online course expert, Destini helps coaches, consultants, and entrepreneurs create and market their online courses through support groups and visual step-by-step online training.
The Reality of Starting A Business
“You can’t expect to launch an online business and see success overnight,” says Destini. Unfortunately for some, that is the exact expectation. In her Savvy Spotlight session, Destini graciously opened up about the reality of starting a business from scratch.
“The hardest part is building your audience from scratch. I do it the organic way. Growing my Facebook group, interacting on social media, building my email list, etc”, comments Destini. Through tested methods, and this new status of being an entrepreneur, Destini had to learn new strategies to grow her business. In her former life, she managed a large organization in the corporate world. This allowed her to outsource and pay people to do things. However, as a small business, those luxuries are no longer there.
You Only Know What You Know
Destini brings in all of her experience from the corporate world into her small business. And although many of her skills were transferrable, she admits that there were indeed rough days. For example, Destini tasked herself with creating her own website, one of the many things she had to figure out for herself. Furthermore, she realized that it is much harder to get in front of your ideal customer because the market is so saturated. These were concerns that Destini did not have to worry about in her corporate role. However, as every entrepreneur knows, your website and reaching your target audience are key!
The biggest learning curve for Destini was in using social media and Pinterest to grow her business organically. With the ever-changing algorithms, trying to get ahead of social media can be a job all on its own.
Bring Your Expertise To The Table
With her 20 years of marketing and product development experience, Destini brings a wealth of knowledge to her business. As an online educator for over 13 years, Destini knows how to help her clients create and launch their courses. But her background doesn’t end there. Destini is also a college professor, teaching marketing to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Destini works very closely with her clients. She enjoys helping people, but she also teaches them to test their courses. She helps her students tweak the course until they get it right for their launches. Destini believes people put too much information in their courses, and it ends up overloading their students. “Courses should allow you to get some quick wins”, said Destini. This allows your students to have victories during the process.

Tips On Starting From Scratch
Destini is pretty structured in how she works. It is a skill she has developed in her 25 years of experience. “Planning is key”, said Destini. Plan your promotions. Plan your launches. She highly recommends using a to-do list to schedule your time. Furthermore, try to avoid wanting to make everything perfect. This was a lesson Destini learned early on as she began her business.
In her final words, Destini remarked that she knows “it can be overwhelming to start a business, and you often feel alone”. Destini suggests networking and finding the support you need.
