The business world is slowly fracturing into two separate worlds. On one side are the companies who are embracing the future, and all the changes that it means for the working world. On the other, are the companies who want to stick to the traditional way of doing things. While there is something to be said for taking the more traditional route, it’s a risky move. The future is coming one way or another, and to succeed, you’ll need to be well placed to manage it.
The good news is that modernity is no bad thing, especially when it comes to working. It’s made work more enjoyable, productive, and innovative, to name but three benefits. But how can you make your workplace one for the modern world? We take a look at a few ways below.
Office Designs
If you think of traditional office space, you’ll likely think of a room with individual desks, and then a few private offices at the side. These were good at the time because the focus was on individual work, but now it’s on collaboration. For that, you need to have more open space that allows flexible working arrangements. For example, there may be a hot desk system where people can bring their laptop and get down to work. There could be individual pods, where people can work when they need to focus. There may be rooms at the side where people can work together. Essentially, it’s about providing space for all different working methods, rather than just one.
Flexible Working
The internet has caused a huge shake-up of how we work. Now, you don’t necessarily need to be in the office to get your work done: you can do it from your home, at a cafe, or wherever you feel most productive. There are advantages to integrating a more flexible working structure into your business — it boosts productivity, saves on energy bills, and helps staff retention. You don’t need much to get it underway, either. Work with cloud experts so that all your work documents are held online, and your employees can work as if they’re in the office, no matter where they are. It is recommended to have people in the office sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be for forty hours a week.
Ambiance
If you want to know what people think about offices, just take a look at any depictions of an office in television shows and movies. They’re dull, they’re grey, there’s little to enjoy. Modern offices are not like that. And rightly so! They put more thought into the ambiance of the space. To bring yours up to speed, look at adding art and color to the walls, and scenting the room. It’ll make work a much more enjoyable place.
Happy Hour
Finally, don’t forget happy hour! People work better when they’re friends with the people around them. Look at setting up a social space with a makeshift bar, chairs, ping pong table, and have fun after work bonding session.
