How To Get Started As A Freelance Copywriter

Big Issues That Face Almost All Startups

Are you considering a career as a freelance copywriter? Freelance opportunities have become extremely popular in the last few years. In addition, the copywriting industry pays extremely well. It all comes down to targeting the right clients, marketing yourself, and implementing strong processes. Here are a few tips to help you get started in this profession:

Pick Your Niche

Before you start any business, it is crucial to pick a niche for yourself. While this does limit your opportunities, it also helps to limit competition and focus on your target audience. Furthermore, selecting a niche will help set you up as an expert in the industry. For example, if you’re able to write highly detailed and expert copy on things like a furnace camera or accounting software, versus someone who just writes “a bit of everything”, who do you think the potential client will want to work with?

Identify Your Ideal Client

Now that you know what your niche is, you have to find your ideal client within that niche. Even though they may seem the same, clients, even from within the same industry are vastly different. Things to consider are customer pain points, their budget, or even the size of their business. Although there’s no right or wrong, it’s all about what suits you best.

Create A Website

While having a website isn’t essential for every business, it is something to consider. Clients want to see what you do. They need to know if you’re a good fit for them. Your website can showcase your products and services and help to establish your reputation in the industry. It can also be a good thing if you want to create your own blog and add content to that.

Start Marketing

Marketing is probably the hardest part for anyone starting a new business. As a freelance copywriter, marketing yourself is how you find potential clients, make money and grow your business. Having a website and being great at what you do won’t matter if you’re not able to get yourself out there in front of potential clients and market yourself in a way that helps you stand out from the competition. Marketing doesn’t have to be complicated – and in fact, shouldn’t be complicated. You can use things like blogging, social media, and even your newsletter if you have one.
